The laboratory of C. Jeffrey Smith (PhD), is located in the Biotechnology Building at the East Carolina University School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina. Aside from Jeff, there are six other members of the lab group . | ||||||||||

This is Jeff busy in his office, checking out a sequencing gel. Unfortunately the entire genome of Bacteroides fragilis has not been sequenced. So we have to do this ourselves. |

| There are two general areas of study that are ongoing in the lab. The first and also the most established area is the study of antibiotic resistance in B. fragilis. This is worked on primarily by Anita Parker and Dr. Mel Bacic. Most recently this study has focused upon the mobilizable element, Tn4555. | |||||||||||
|
Anita Parker is an indispensable member of the lab group. She is currently a lab technician who also studied for her Masters degree in the lab. |

Dr. Mel Bacic is a relatively new member of the lab. Originally from Florida, Mel studied for her Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina. You can check out Mels cat Clingon in the pets corner. |

| The second project in the lab is the study of the oxidative stress response in B. fragilis. There are currently five of us working on this project. Dr. Edson Rocha is the guy who really got it all going with his studies of catalase. Chris Herren, Chris Sund and I are looking at some of the other genes that are induced by oxygen. Greg is the newest member of the lab and is a technition working under the supervision of Edson Rocha. | |||||||||||

Bacteroides are anaerobic so are unable to survive in the oxygen rich environment in which we live. So to grow them we use an anaerobe chamber. Shown in this picture is Edson Rocha, a Research Instructor from Brazil working in the chamber (another picture of Edson) |

Chris Herren is another of the labs grad students. He's originally from Richmond Virginia. |

This is Darren Smalley, the sucker whos writing these pages. I'm a grad student from Leicester in Great Britain. I just graduated in May and will be moving to Oklahoma at the end of July. Chris Sund will be updating the Web page from now on. |

Christian Sund is a second year doctoral student who is originally from Richmond Virginia. Chris graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University and is currently learning to play golf (badly!) |

Greg Wells is the newest member from the lab and originates from Enfield, NC. Greg graduated from ECU in 2000 and works under Edson Rocha on oxidative stress. |
